A Thrifted Western Wedding in the California Desert

There is something undeniably magical about a Joshua Tree National Park elopement. Between the iconic Joshua trees, endless desert views, warm golden light, and peaceful landscapes, it’s one of the most breathtaking places in the country for couples who want an intimate wedding experience.

When I was offered the opportunity to photograph Kayla and Ryan’s destination elopement in Joshua Tree, I knew it would be something special. As a St. Louis destination wedding photographer, I love photographing weddings that feel deeply personal, and this day was exactly that.

Instead of following wedding traditions, they created a celebration that reflected who they are—creative, intentional, and effortlessly cool.

A Thrifted Western Wedding with a Modern Twist

One of my favorite things about this wedding was how every detail told a story.

Kayla found her wedding dress at a local thrift store in St. Louis. Rather than shopping at a traditional bridal boutique, she discovered a beautiful western-inspired dress that perfectly fit the vision she had for their day. She paired it with classic cowgirl boots, creating a look that felt timeless without feeling overly country.

Ryan embraced the same idea by thrifting his shoes and finding a vintage bolo tie that completed his outfit.

Together, their style was less “rustic barn wedding” and more modern desert western—creative, artistic, and full of personality. Every detail felt intentional because it represented them, not because it followed trends.

As a wedding photographer, these are always my favorite weddings to photograph. When couples choose details that genuinely reflect their personalities, the photographs become so much more meaningful years later.

An Intimate Airbnb Ceremony Surrounded by Joshua Trees

Rather than hosting a large wedding, Kayla and Ryan invited only their closest family members to celebrate alongside them.

They rented a beautiful Airbnb surrounded by the desert landscape of Joshua Tree. The backyard overlooked native desert plants and iconic Joshua trees, creating an intimate ceremony space that felt peaceful and private.

When I arrived, I started the morning by photographing all of the meaningful details—the thrifted dress, Ryan’s bolo tie, boots, jewelry, and the small touches that made their wedding uniquely theirs.

Their ceremony took place right in the backyard with parents and siblings gathered together. There weren’t hundreds of guests or elaborate decorations.

Just the people who mattered most.

One of the things I love most about intimate weddings and elopements is how relaxed they feel. Couples are able to slow down, be present, and truly experience every moment without the pressure of a large wedding timeline.

Family Portraits Before Exploring Joshua Tree National Park

After the ceremony, we spent time photographing family portraits while everyone was together.

One of the biggest misconceptions about elopements is that couples have to celebrate completely alone. That’s simply not true.

Including immediate family allows couples to enjoy an intimate wedding experience while still sharing meaningful moments with the people they love most.

Once family portraits were finished, it was time for the adventure portion of the day.

We headed into Joshua Tree National Park, where we explored several incredible locations throughout the park, stopping whenever beautiful light or dramatic scenery caught our attention.

Golden Hour in Joshua Tree National Park

If you’ve never experienced sunset in Joshua Tree, it is difficult to describe.

As the sun begins to lower, the desert transforms. Warm golden light washes across the rock formations while the Joshua trees cast long shadows across the sand. Every direction becomes more beautiful than the last.

We spent the evening wandering through different areas of the park, creating portraits that felt adventurous while still focusing on genuine connection between Kayla and Ryan.

Some of my favorite photographs from the day happened during those final moments before sunset, when the light became soft, warm, and almost dreamlike.

It’s one of the many reasons Joshua Tree continues to be one of my favorite places for destination weddings and elopements.

Traveling from St. Louis to Photograph Destination Weddings

Although I’m based near St. Louis, Missouri, destination weddings have become some of my favorite celebrations to photograph.
